Our History

Markstay‑Warren’s history is closely tied to the development of Northern Ontario’s railway and forestry industries. The arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in the late 1800s was instrumental in opening the area to settlement and economic growth. Following the completion of the transcontinental rail line in 1885, communities began to emerge along the railway, attracting settlers—many of them French‑Canadian families from Quebec—seeking opportunities in logging, farming, and trade.

One of the area’s earliest settlements was Rivière‑Veuve, named after the Veuve River that flows through the region. Forestry became a cornerstone of the local economy, particularly after the establishment of a major sawmill operation in 1890, which supported employment and development throughout the surrounding townships. Agriculture also played a vital role, with family farms shaping the landscape and community life in what are now the villages of Markstay and Warren.

On January 1, 1999, the modern Municipality of Markstay‑Warren was officially formed through the amalgamation of several former townships into a single‑tier municipality. This unification strengthened local governance while preserving the rural character and unique identities of the area’s villages and hamlets.
