POSITION TITLE: Facility Operator – Casual Part-Time

DEPARTMENT: Recreation Department

REPORTING RELATIONSHIP: Reports to the Recreation Facility Coordinator

PURPOSE OF POSITION:

Reporting to the Recreation Facility Coordinator, the incumbent is responsible for the implementation of recreational programs as well as the operation, maintenance, and cleaning of the Community Hall/Arena, Outdoor Rinks and Ball Fields.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Duties Performed on a Regular Basis:

  • Carry out the operations and maintenance of recreation facilities by:
    • Installation of rink ice and providing ongoing maintenance by utilizing specialized tools and equipment;
    • Keeping ice surface clean and free of debris by using ice edger;
    • Repairing cracks and gouges in ice as they appear;
    • Flooding the base, painting ice surface and marking of lines;
    • Checking ice making and maintenance equipment daily to ensure that tools and equipment are maintained in proper working order;
    • Carry out minor building and equipment maintenance according to the maintenance program and/or as required by damages, breakdowns, normal wear and tear and submit completed record of repairs;
    • Reporting all maintenance problems or emergencies requiring tradesmen or major work to immediate supervisor;
    • Ensure that facilities are properly cleaned and maintained and that all exits remain unobstructed from snow, ice or debris, including but not limited to stands, lobbies, dressing rooms, storage rooms, washrooms, front entrance way and fire exits;
    • Ensure that facilities are properly used by the public and evict those individuals who may be causing a disturbance or undue harm to others or the facility (request assistance from the local authorities if required). Report all disturbances in written format to immediate supervisor including action taken.
    • Cleaning of community arena hall and bathrooms after events.
  • Carry out general responsibilities as follows:
    • Receive user fees with respect to ice and hall rentals, skate sharpening, advertising signs and billboards, and submit daily with proper documentation within the internal reporting system;
    • Completing and submitting of all reporting requirements and work orders in a timely and accurate manner;
    • Ensure facilities are prepared and open during scheduled hours;
    • Ensure schedule is followed and enforced by all user groups;
    • Supervise casual staff hired to assist with duties to ensure that all job duties and responsibilities are performed;
    • Work closely with user groups and the public to promote the use of the facility;
    • Ensure that user groups and the public needs are met in accordance with approvals given and that events are carried out in a timely, efficient and professional manner.

Duties Performed on a Periodic Basis

  • Assist other departments or organizations with the delivery of special events as requested by the Chief Administrative Officer or designate;
  • Post schedules, advise and maintain bulletin boards and posted announcements;
  • Carries out additional duties as may be required from time to time by the Chief Administrative Officer or designate.

Working Conditions

  • Tasks will require independent work;
  • Evening and weekend work is required based on facility bookings;
  • This job requires interfacing with the public and ensuring facility security during events;
  • The venue may hold a liquor license through the event coordinator;
  • Occasional heavy lifting may be required.

Hours of Work:

  • Up to 20 hours per week. Shift work. Typical hours will fall on evenings and weekend.
  • Evening and weekend work is required based on facility bookings.

  • Maintain required skills through training, courses and workshops

EDUCATION AND LICENCING

  • Grade 12
  • Class G License
  • Communication Skills in English
  • Communication Skills in French is an asset

KNOWLEDGE AND Skill:

  • Operational, organizational and leadership ability;
  • Developed communication and public relations skills;
  • Basic Knowledge of Municipal Recreational budgeting and accounting;
  • Thorough knowledge in the operation and maintenance of equipment, vehicles and materials in the delivery of recreation programs;
  • Technical skills in the mechanical maintenance and operation of ice plants and ice-making.
