Work includes road and drainage maintenance support, municipal property and facility maintenance, winter operations support, traffic control assistance, site clean-up, material handling, and other related duties as assigned. Resumes are to clearly identify the position being applied for.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that only applicants chosen to progress to the interview stage will be contacted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Should you have any questions, please contact the Municipal Office at (705) 853-4536.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><br><strong>JOB DESCRIPTION<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>POSITION TITLE: <\/strong>General Labourer<br><strong>DEPARTMENT:<\/strong> Public Works<br><strong>REPORTING RELATIONSHIP:<\/strong> Reports to the Manager of Public Works (day-to-day direction may be provided by the Lead Hand)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>PURPOSE OF POSITION:<\/strong><br>Under the supervision of the Manager of Public Works or designate, the General Labourer carries out general labour, maintenance, and support functions for the development and maintenance of the municipal road system and other municipal infrastructure and properties. The General Labourer supports safe, timely, and efficient delivery of Public Works services across the Municipality of Markstay-Warren and performs duties in accordance with municipal standard operating procedures and all health and safety requirements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:<\/strong><br>\u2022 Consider public safety for all operations<br>\u2022 Ensure assigned work is completed to municipal standards and in accordance with municipal policies and standard operating procedures<br>\u2022 Work co-operatively with employees, casual staff, contractors, and suppliers as required for the purposes of site work, maintenance, and municipal operations<br>\u2022 Follow safety plans for work sites and comply with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its regulations<br>\u2022 Assist with the set-up and maintenance of traffic control for work zones (signage, cones, barricades) where required<br>\u2022 Perform general labour tasks including shoveling, raking, brushing, debris removal, site clean-up, material handling, loading\/unloading, and minor construction support<br>\u2022 Perform pre-use checks and basic maintenance checks on tools and assigned vehicles\/equipment as directed<br>\u2022 Perform minor and routine maintenance tasks on tools and equipment (cleaning, greasing, fluids, basic checks) and report defects, damage, or safety concerns to the Lead Hand or Manager as soon as identified<br>\u2022 Ensure tools, equipment, vehicles, and work areas are kept clean and organized (inside and out where applicable)<br>\u2022 Ensure preventative measures against unwanted entry by securing tools, equipment, vehicles, keys, and facilities as directed (yard\/garage security, locking up, proper storage)<br>\u2022 Complete and submit documentation in a timely manner (daily worksheets, checklists, logs, Ontario One Call paperwork as assigned, inventory forms, etc.)<br>\u2022 Participate in activities related to safe road services programs by assisting with housekeeping of storage areas and participating in inventory processes as required<br>\u2022 Assist in the repair and maintenance of water and wastewater systems through labour-related duties as required and as trained\/authorized (emergency clean-ups, site support, basic maintenance tasks)<br>\u2022 Support continuity of operations and municipal standards when working around rented or contracted equipment by maintaining safe distances, following direction, and keeping work sites organized<br>\u2022 Participate in the Municipality\u2019s winter response protocol, including yard preparation, loading materials, assisting with snow and ice control activities, and responding to storm-related operational needs as directed<br>\u2022 Perform labour-related duties including but not limited to repair and replacement of:<br>     o asphalt and cold patch support<br>     o culverts (installation support, maintenance, ditching support)<br>     o guard-rail components<br>     o signage and posts<br>\u2022 Carry out additional duties as may be required by the Manager of Public Works or designate<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The General Labourer provides support in the following areas:<br>\u2022 Inspection and basic maintenance support for public infrastructure (roads, stormwater, parks, facilities, and municipal property) as assigned<br>\u2022 Road maintenance including:<br>     o plowing assistance and winter yard support (as directed)<br>     o sanding and salting support (loading, stockpile management, site support)<br>     o road defect repair support<br>     o brushing and obstacle\/debris removal<br>\u2022 Drainage including clearing, maintaining, and replacing\/supporting:<br>     o municipal drains<br>     o culverts<br>     o catch basins<br>     o bridges (labour support and site housekeeping)<br>     o stormwater network<br>\u2022 Public property maintenance:<br>     o garages and yards<br>     o parking lots<br>     o public buildings<br>     o parks and cemeteries (supporting installations and heavier labour tasks when directed by Public Works)<br>\u2022 Landfill maintenance support<br>\u2022 Aggregate pit maintenance support<br>\u2022 Location services (Ontario One Call) support, as assigned and trained<br>\u2022 Garbage collection and disposal (special circumstances and as directed)<br>\u2022 Maintaining security of facilities and work sites to prevent unauthorized individuals from entering<br>\u2022 Other tasks as assigned by the Manager of Public Works<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>WORKING CONDITIONS:<\/strong><br>\u2022 The General Labourer position is a year-round position and may involve outdoor work<br>\u2022 Exposure to severe weather conditions (snow, rain, heat, cold, flooding)<br>\u2022 Work is in and around municipal work sites that may include moving vehicles, machinery, noise, dust, and fumes<br>\u2022 Works on uneven ground, roadsides, ditches, and varying terrain<br>\u2022 Must be prepared to respond to difficult situations due to severe weather conditions and emergency events<br>\u2022 Occasional exposure to sewage odours during emergency clean-ups<br>\u2022 Working with dust control products\/materials as required<br>\u2022 Occasional confrontations with the public may be encountered due to the nature of the work<br>\u2022 Occasional heavy lifting may be required (for example, materials handling and culvert installation support)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>HOURS OF WORK:<\/strong><br>\u2022 Summer Hours: 6:00am\u20134:30pm, 4-day shift between Monday to Friday<br>\u2022 Winter Hours: 7:00am\u20133:30pm, Monday to Friday, subject to:<br>     o Shifted schedule: if weather warrants, the regular workday may be shifted to assist winter response activities<br>     o On call \/ standby: may be required during winter storms or emergencies, subject to municipal practice<br>     o Call out: 4-hour minimum to deal with an emergency<br>     o Schedule shifts or on-call periods will be notified within 24 hours when possible; call-outs may occur with minimal notice as incidents arise<br>     o Possibility of overtime on nights and weekends when required<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>REQUIRED TRAINING:<\/strong><br>\u2022 Maintain required skills through training, courses, and workshops as directed by the Municipality<br>\u2022
